I often get asked what is a good play the Banjo Minnow book. I guess that's because I learned the guitar out of books, and have been successful at that. I wish I had a concrete answer for the question, but there are so many variables that I'll just give some pointers of what to look for.
When I Goldtone Banjo starting out, every play the guitar book was written by Mel Bay it seemed. Most of those books just seemed like a rehash of the former book. I finally came across one that resonated with me, and then I was on my way.

Don't forget the internet too. There are several very high quality courses online, and thousands have taught themselves to play well just from these method books alone. The internet has brought learning the guitar to a whole new level just in terms of the material available in video form too. A simple search on You tube yields thousands of online tips and techniques. Many are free!
So I guess I'm not a huge help, at least not in recommending one particular method or play the guitar book. The best thing you can do is just get out there, start experimenting until you find something that works for you, then just practice, and practice some more!
